I see. So that is obviously different the TV itself being able to do 5.1. I haven't been able to test this, but from what I've read a console plugged in can get 5.1, which confuses things even more.

I did some further testing yesterday and I did get some surround sound working, but I have a feeling that is just the receiver doing its best at emulating surround from the 2.0 track being passed through. I still need to look into this further.

Try this and see what happens. This has made me doubt what Windows is saying entirely.

Head here and download a Dolby test trailer. I downloaded the top one called "Amaze".

https://thedigitaltheater.com/index.php/dolby-trailers

Open up VLC player - I'm using optical from the TV, so I had to change the following setting:

Tools > Preferences...

At the bottom is an option to show advanced settings. Under "Show Settings" click "All".

Then go to... Audio > Check the box that says "Use S/PDIF when available".

At the moment my Windows sound settings say max 2 channels under the supported formats tab for the TV, and when I click "configure" on the TV I only get a stereo option.

That said, when I play this Dolby trailer in VLC my surround system automatically switches to Dolby Digital and plays out of all speakers.

I have no idea what this means, but its progress.
Hi,

I have a sound issue on win8.1 that I hope you can help me fix.
My old Loewe Concept L32 screen does not receive audio through HDMI and apaprently tells all my devices not to send any. I am now trying to get the sound from my ASUS K551LN laptop (i7; Geforce 840M) https://www.asus.com/Laptops/K551LN/specifications/) to my Denon AV amplifier (which has no hdmi) through a hdmi audio extractor installed between the TV and the laptop.
I did what was required, and have had no success, the laptop refuses to send hdmi audio to the TV.

On my laptop no2 with win7, it worked, I have sound. Hdmi audio has also worked with lots of different newer TVs from both these laptops.

The win7 laptop has the Nvidia HD Audio device, which could always be seen, but only now can also be selected. The win8.1 one does not have that device (not supported for win8 any more), and no inactive HD Audio device can be seen.

Is there any way to get this right?
Hello all

Is CRU able to help me fix the auto detection of monitors turning on or off?
My TV is is connected to a win7 PC (switched by an AV processor) and widows detects the tv turning on and off.
Then windows starts fiddling the video. but most annoyingly, the audio stream trough the HDMI is stopped.

PC------- AV7704 ------ TV
The PC will play movies and pure audio and i have only 1 HDMI.
In case of pure audio i want the link between the PC and AV not to be disturbed when the TV toggles standby.

Can the CRU tool help me handling this?

No.

Sounds to me like the Windows 8.1 laptop has switchable graphics, so Intel's driver would handle the HDMI output instead of NVIDIA's driver. I don't know how Intel deals with HDMI audio.

It shows my TV (Samsung MU7000) DOES do 5.1 optical pass through. There's still hope I guess, but I really don't know where to go from here if the EDID allowing 5.1 down the cable.
How would you do optical passthrough with HDMI? The only way to do a true passthrough is if the signal were never altered, which would require the same type of connection for both input and output. If the input is HDMI but the output is optical, then the TV has to process it.
hi all,

So I can set my TV to 1440p 120Hz using CRU, and a440p is one of the natively supported resolutions. but it always crop/shrinks instead of fitting to screen.

typically 1440p 60hz scales properly. Could someone point me in the right direction? first time using CRU.

Thanks! and thank you to ToastyX!! this is an amazing app!

CRU doesn't deal with scaling or positioning. That's up to the TV. Clearly the TV's scaler doesn't handle 1440p @ 120 Hz correctly. It might only support 120 Hz correctly with 1080p.

I see, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll give up on that unless i wanna play cropped mode lol.

Thanks!
