If it's supposed to support 48 Gbps, then there's a driver issue somewhere. I can't find specific information on this particular model, but if it has an AMD Ryzen CPU with Vega 8 GPU and switchable graphics with an NVIDIA GPU, then the Vega 8 GPU is the limiting factor because it only supports HDMI 2.0. If the laptop has a way to turn off the Vega 8 GPU and use only the NVIDIA GPU, then it might work.

Yes, HDR requires 25% more bandwidth for 10 bpc versus 8 bpc. Yes, 160 Hz is possible at lower resolutions if the monitor allows it as long as the pixel clock is no more than 600 MHz for 8 bpc/4:4:4, and 480 MHz for 10 bpc/4:4:4. 2400x1350 @ 160 Hz is possible with 8 bpc/4:4:4. YCbCr 4:2:2 would allow up to 900 MHz for 8 bpc and 720 MHz for 10 bpc if the GPU allows 4:2:2 for custom resolutions. 2560x1440 @ 160 Hz should be possible with 10 bpc/4:2:2 and HDR. Currently custom 4:2:0 resolutions are not possible.

the HDMI 2.1 connects directly to the dGPU becuase its a MUXLess laptop(so i have gsync and everything) and the Display 1.3 Block does show the 4K 160hz spec not sure how all this works
(but i also cannot switch to GPU scaling most likely because of This hybrid graphics setup maybe?)
i don't know if any laptop explicitly says HDMI 2.1 FRL so just want to see whats doable and whats not

Also i can't really edit stuff under the detailed res slot as it putting 160hz just goes red
and under Extension Slots CTA 861 i can add stuff under TV res but i cannot manually put 2560 x 1440 so not sure what to do to get 160hz under 4K

HDMI 2.1 usually means it supports FRL, but then the HDMI Forum basically said anything that supports HDMI 2.0 can be considered HDMI 2.1 because the new features are optional, so now there is confusion about what 2.1 actually means. They should have called it HDMI 3.0 because 2.1 is vastly different from 2.0. Whatever the case, the laptop is acting like it doesn't support FRL, so either it's not supposed to, or there's a driver or firmware issue preventing it from working.

Anything beyond 655.35 MHz pixel clock needs to be in a DisplayID extension block.

i was watching itsjerians video on it and im meant to cop the timings and other things from the extention blocks. can i use the timings from detailed resolutions for them?

ok so i added 2560 x 1440 with 144hz again manually (its already there in displayID) and now i do see pop up in nvidia control panel too but 2560 x1440 @ 160hz gave me a black screen (maybe its because of the HDR thing which i am not sure how to specifiy it should be at 4:2:2 or whatever the case) trying to see now if i can re-add 3840 x 2160 @144 hz and see if it appears)

P.S 1440p @144hz does work with HDR 8bpc (604MHz pixel clock)

You should also ask Acer because the limitation is coming from the laptop. You can turn off HDR in the Windows display settings. It's possible the monitor won't accept 2560x1440 @ 160 Hz even if it supports 160 Hz at the native resolution.

You need to look at both the color depth and the color format for the maximum pixel clock:

8 bpc/4:4:4 = 600 MHz
8 bpc/4:2:2 = 900 MHz
8 bpc/4:2:0 = 1200 MHz

10 bpc/4:4:4 = 480 MHz
10 bpc/4:2:2 = 720 MHz
10 bpc/4:2:0 = 960 MHz

YCbCr 4:2:0 only works with TV resolutions marked in the capability map, so that's where 3840x2160 @ 120 Hz is coming from.

You can specify the output color depth and color format in the NVIDIA control panel in the section where you change the resolution (it's in your first screen shot), but you shouldn't need to because it should use whatever is available.

It shouldn't matter where the resolution is. Detailed resolutions in the main window and the CTA-861 extension block work exactly the same way.

I'm not sure how much I understood how I can adjust the bpc and color depth etc but will definitely try to see what can work and what doesn't and will see if Acer can give me any answer , the preset modes don't show 160hz like you said but it 144hz does work idly. If not will just stick to 2160p 120hz and 2160p60hz or 1440p@144hz for HDR. Thanks for the great detailed info but yeah HDMI specification and terminology is a huge mess
