You shouldn't have to do anything special for higher refresh rates to work. Either your laptop only supports DisplayPort 1.1 speeds, or the driver is not handling it correctly. 2560x1440 @ 144 Hz uses a lot of bandwidth and requires DisplayPort 1.2.
