Is there a way to control stretching?
I have a 16:9 monitor, previously i've played games at 5:4 monitor on 4:3 res.
Since i've swapped to 16:9 i noticed a few differences in aspect ratio. Playing 4:3 res on my new monitor it seemed more vertical than on my previous one. Back on 5:4 1280x1024 if i played on 4:3 1024x768 it stretched from 4:3 to 5:4.
So my question is... Is there a way to control how much of image is being stretched and how small black bars become? Is it possible to somehow run 5:4 1024x768 on 16:9 monitor? Also does the size of the screen matters on this?

P.S Running 4:3 1152x864 on 16:9 monitor unstretched gives the exact same feel as 4:3 on 5:4. You can try comparing 1152x864 to any 4:3 resolution on 16:9 monitor to see the difference in black bars.

RE: Is there a way to control stretching?
Most monitors and GPU scaling only offer 1:1, aspect, or full screen scaling. Some monitors offer 16:9 or 4:3 scaling, but not 5:4. I don't understand how 1152x864 looks the same on a 16:9 monitor. That's a 4:3 resolution.

The black bars are smaller and picture is wider when comparing to any other 4:3 res. It does look this way to me. It's like it's 'half stretched'.

That doesn't make sense unless the monitor is scaling it wrong. It should scale the same as any other 4:3 resolution, and a 4:3 resolution on a 5:4 monitor would be taller or skinnier, not wider.

If the 16:9 monitor is 1920x1080, then scaling 2048x1080 to fill the screen should make it skinnier, or 1800x1080 if you want it wider by the same amount. GPU scaling won't scale down higher resolutions, but the monitor might.

so you've got me and answer now i can try making these resolutions and see which i'll like
