Thank you very much for replying. It's working properly now! But I had to still tweak the last value.

I applied the above line to my xorg.conf but had ghosting in the upper 1/4 of the image again... So in desperation I started incrementing the last number until I found a mode that has no ghosting and doesn't switch the monitor off.

So the correct Linux mode-line is:
Modeline "1680x1050_120" 329.80 1680 1700 1720 1780 1050 1053 1059 1700 +hsync +vsync

No sure how -- but it works. So I'm very happy. Thank you guys again.
