With HDMI, you'd have to add 3840x2160 @ 30 Hz because HDMI 1.x doesn't have enough bandwidth for 60 Hz.

That sounds about right. 3840x2160 is a high resolution for a 28" monitor, so everything will appear smaller unless you adjust the DPI settings.
