One of my goals for CRU 1.3 is to use driver-specific methods to read the default extension block so this won't be necessary anymore.

I've tried using the NVIDIA Control Panel too, but it made no difference either. Also, I'm not concerned about adding custom resolutions, just my own refresh rates.
