RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
(11-30-2025 11:22 AM)EeK Wrote:  Hi @ToastyX,

I’ve been using CRU for a long time (thanks for creating such an amazing tool) - initially to remove higher-than-4K resolutions from my LG OLED TVs.

I recently upgraded to a Samsung S90F OLED TV, which adds the issue of reporting incorrect audio formats (resulting in the loss of 7.1 surround and Atmos when the TV passes audio to my AVR via eARC).

Naturally, I used CRU to fix this and ran into the Nvidia driver behavior where EDID overrides are ignored when DSC is engaged. The S90F supports 3840×2160 @ 144 Hz only with DSC when using RGB Full 10-bit, so I limited it to 3840×2160 @ 120 Hz and added the necessary audio formats - these ones, copied from my Denon AVR-X4400H (the linked image is part of a tutorial I wrote for AVS Forum).

Everything worked perfectly except for Atmos. I always get 7.1, and the correct encoded formats (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital - Samsung doesn't support DTS formats) consistently appear under Supported Formats, but Dolby Atmos for Home Theater only showed up twice.

I was able to trigger Atmos only immediately after restarting the GPU driver following the EDID change, and once more after unplugging/re-plugging the HDMI cable. In both cases, the option disappeared again on the next reboot. I haven’t found a reliable way to make it reappear, and I don’t want to risk damaging the GPU’s HDMI port by repeatedly unplugging and reconnecting the cable.

Do you have any idea what might be causing this or know of any possible fixes/workarounds? I’d love to keep Atmos support without having to run a second HDMI cable from the GPU to the AVR and deal with all the complications of using a secondary display (including the other Nvidia bug mentioned in the OP).

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S.: This is what my Speaker Setup looks like. I tried checking the box for "Top front left/right" (to match my 7.1.2 Atmos setup), but that didn't seem to make a difference. In fact, in the two instances that Dolby Atmos for Home Theater did show up and work, I had that box unchecked.
I don't know what's required for Atmos. The speaker setup is just informational and doesn't affect anything. If it's working inconsistently, that could indicate another driver bug, but I'm not sure how the driver is involved with this. By the way, the multi monitor driver bug might not happen with VRR disabled, so that's another option to try.

RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Hi Toasty! Im having some trouble with CRU and my CRT.... it worked perfectly before but now I'm not sure what's wrong.

It's an AppleColor AppleColor High Resolution RGB Monitor (M0401) which needs to be set to Exact CRT, 760x570 and 35 khz, which I'm 99% sure what it was set at before.

https://crtdatabase.com/crts/apple/apple...itor-m0401

But now i'm getting duplication on the monitor showing there's something gone wrong, assuming related to the refresh rate?

Any advice?
TY!

RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Edit *8:06 AM DEC 05*: I have a spare NVIDIA GPU, To rule it out being an AMD Driver problem, I'm gonna install the NV GPU. Will report back.
Edit 2 *8:47 AM* I used DDU to remove my RX 6700 XT drivers and tested with my old GTX 760 to rule out AMD Driver issues. Windows now gives me two different 5.1 options (side-based and rear-based), but the exact same problem remains — Side Left and Side Right are swapped on 5.1/7.1 PCM. Even the rear-based option still maps rear channels to the side speakers incorrectly. So it’s clearly not the GPU or drivers. Windows is mismapping channels somewhere, and it’s driving me nuts. EQAPO could swap them, but it doesn’t work properly with WASAPI/passthrough.

Really hoping a solution exists…

I’m so sorry for this wildly detailed message but good lord I’ve exhausted myself of all options.

Hi Folks.
I really apologize for what might be an odd request, but is there such a tool or possibly someone with the authority/skill to check something for me? Windows is wrongly interperting my Side left and side right speakers on my 7.1 surround setup. I've gone through hours and hours of troubleshooting. I've spent countless hours fudgeing around with the EDID, but windows ignores some parts of it. Especially with Audio. (And speaker allocation)
My problem is that my Side left and Side right speakers are "swapped" (Left is coming from the right, and right is coming from the left)

Could somebody maybe point me in the direction to a tool, or even where I can go digging to swap these back as they should be? Or if somebody else has a 5.1/7.1 setup please use the windows test tones located in windows settings, system, sound, more sound settings (Bottom of the page) right click your surround setup under playback, hit configure speakers, pick any config that has the side left and side right speakers and click them - windows will play a test tone sound. Are they swapped for you? and here is a reddit post if somebody else might have any insight or wanted to read through more steps that ive taken. (If you think you might have something please please please read the post. I don't wanna paste it all here cause it's awfully long and I don't wanna make this any longer
Thank you ❤️

I’m so sorry for this wildly detailed message but good lord I’ve exhausted myself of all options.

Summary of Key Points

I have my AMD 6700XT connected to my AVR over HDMI.

Windows is not identifying my speaker layout correctly.

With a proper 7.1 setup, Windows should show 7.1 Surround plus two separate 5.1 profiles (rear-based and side-based). https://i.imgur.com/UaXklW2.png ← (I should see the TWO options) <- Edit: Seems like this is an AMD Specific Problem.

My issue isn’t with 5.1 playback itself, but the fact that I only see one 5.1 option suggests Windows is interpreting my speaker configuration incorrectly. https://i.imgur.com/WH7Be34.png ← (I see this on my computer)

In 5.1 test tones from Windows I have the “rear-based” configuration available, but even though it shows the rear speakers, I still hear them coming from my side channels, and those side channels are swapped left/right.

In 7.1 testing, my rear mapping is correct, but the side left/right channels remain swapped.

Bitstreamed formats (Dolby Digital/Plus, DTS/HD, TrueHD) all work properly on my AVR from windows (KODI/Plex passthrough - and ALL speakers work, and are mapped correctly)

The problem only happens with PCM/LPCM, which points to Windows receiving incorrect speaker-capability information.

This makes me suspect an EDID interpretation issue, or possibly something that could be corrected through an EDID override from CRU or by changing something in Windows regedit. I really appreciate all of your help. Thanks lord PLEASE

Windows wouldn't be mismapping channels unless there's a driver bug somewhere. This sounds like a firmware bug in the AVR itself since the problem only happens with LPCM. The EDID does not deal with mapping speakers, so there is no way to swap them in the EDID.

Intel limits HDMI 1.4 to 300.99 MHz pixel clock, but GPUs that support HDMI 2.0 should support up to 340 MHz pixel clock. The new driver must have changed the limit for some reason. You'll have to ask Intel support about that. Installing the older driver should work, but Windows will automatically update to the newer driver, so you would have to roll back the update in Device Manager. The errors are unrelated to the actual driver. They are from some other component such as the control panel.

You might be able to get it to work with the newer driver by adding an HDMI 2.x data block in the CTA-861 extension block. If that doesn't work, then try adding a lower refresh rate within the pixel clock limit such as 56 Hz.

I've cleaned up drivers (using DDU in Safe Mode) and did a clean driver install using old version.

Old driver -> Limited to 1920x1080(60) -> Tried CRU using your recommendation -> Still limited ... Remark, even after restating driver (I tried both restart and restart64), the * still remains in CRU

Then.... DDU again and now tried the newest driver, but results were the same..

In time, I also tried HDMI data in CTA-861 ext block... no effect. In all cases, I tried 60, 56 and 50Hz ... In these scenarios the frequency didn't exceed 300 Mhz (175 lower and 285 max)

I guess I'm stucked in 1920x1080 in a 34" monitor... Dell notebook with Intel Graphics Driver never more!!!

Thanks anyway!

Thanks anyway!
I forgot you wouldn't be able to read the default extension block with Intel, so if you create your own CTA-861 extension block, you need to have both the HDMI and HDMI 2 data blocks, not just HDMI 2. Also delete the default extension block.

Hi ToastyX. I tried this too... but still not working.

I have attached some screenshots. Did I miss something or something wrong?

Tks once again!
