Variable refresh rate is an HDMI 2.1 feature that isn't present in the HDMI 2.0 standard. This is separate from HDMI FreeSync, which is AMD's own solution, although I don't know if they're compatible or not. DisplayPort FreeSync is different and uses adaptive sync, which is what NVIDIA calls G-SYNC compatible.
